How To Easily Decide On The Right Fashion Designer School For You And Your Talents

Whether you are going into fashion design, merchandising or fashion marketing, you are going to want to go into fashion designer school. There are schools all over the United States and Europe from which to choose. Choosing the right fashion designer school is no different than choosing the right college. You want to look at the curriculum, the alumni, the price and what they can offer to teach you. Once you have chosen a few fashion designer schools that appeal to you, you can begin the application process. Again, this is just like choosing a college. It is highly competitive and not everyone gets in.

If you are particularly talented or wealthy, you may have your choice of schools to which you can attend. If you are like 99 percent of the rest of the population, however, you will probably go where you can get accepted and to a school which you can afford. It does not matter. While you want to aspire to get into the best school, the most important thing is that when you do get to fashion designer school, you learn as much as you can about your craft.

Fashion design is a very competitive business with many different avenues. You can study to be a designer, a merchandiser, a marketer or even a model at these schools. If you have aspirations of becoming a famous designer, do your best to learn everything you can no matter which school you attend. You may even do better at a smaller school that can give you more individualized attention.

If you have exceptional talent and have won any Junior designer awards, you may be eligible for a scholarship to certain designer schools. You should look into this before you begin your application process. If you admire a certain designer and they are an alumni from a certain school, you can write to them and ask them how they felt about the school and tell them you are thinking of applying at this school. Ask them other schools they recommend. You can actually do this with several designers. You will probably not hear from those that are big names, but those who are up and coming may be more than willing to help you out.

Visit each of the schools, if possible, and observe the campus. Will you be able to work there? Fashion design demands creativity. Creativity demands a certain environment. You want to make sure that the environment will enhance your creative spirit and not stifle it.

Most of all, you want to make sure that you can afford the tuition to designer school. There are many ways to do this. If someone really wants to attend school, there is nothing stopping them, not even money. Student loans are available, as are grants. Look into every avenue you can. Speak to your mentors about different financial avenues you can take.

If at all possible, try to get a job in a fashion house, even if it is just as a cleaner. Here you can learn a bit about the trade and also get to know those higher in the field. They may be willing to not only steer you to the right school, but mentor you as well. Best of all, you will probably have a job when you come out.

If you aspire for a career in fashion design, do not let anything stop you. Apply to as many schools as you can and take the offer that you can get. Continue to create, continue to write to those who you admire and learn to network. School is only one stepping stone to a successful career. It may open a few doors on a resume. But the talent is what gets you through the doors and into the front offices. If you have the talent, do not let anything stand in your way.

Making Your Very Own Hats

These little veil hats, so very popular today, are appropriate for all occasions. They are light and airy, youthful and very flattering. While you will feel almost hatless, they still give you that smart, feminine, finished dash that every well-dressed woman seeks.

They can be made elaborate for dressy occasions, using sequins, beads, flowers or feathers; or very plain for casual wear, using velvet bows, etc.

Material Required

It takes 28" of veiling - either fine face veiling or coarse chicken wire - to make an even all around whimsey.

Blocking Veils And Whimseys

Method For Veiling

Lap and join veiling ends, one over the other, and sew with a fine running stitch. Then gather around one side of veiling, pull thread tight and fasten thread. Pin gathered end to top of head block with a push-pin and gently pull veiling toward bottom of block to smooth out gathers. Pass quickly through steam to shape veiling to block

Method For Chicken Wire

The same procedure is used for chicken wire, except for joining the ends. Lap chicken wire over 1" and match diagonal squares. Tie-tack each diagonal square instead of a running stitch. Have seam, in back. Trimming is optional.

Method For Draped Whimsey:

If you want a whimsey with a short back, do not join veiling ends. Gather one side of veiling and pin to block. Carefully drape veiling around block, pulling ends up in back on each side to within about 2" of top, and sew together Carefully steam front of veil to fit block. Arrange trimming on top of veil and use small velvet bows to finish off ends of veiling you have draped up to top of block.

Attaching Veils:

Usually it is wise to block all veils a little, using steam sparingly. Blocking gives the veil that rounded, professional look and makes it stand away from the face. Almost all short face veils require 2/3 yd. of veiling. After you have shaped the veil, pin center of veil to hat. Put the hat on, and gather ends of veil up to sides or back of hat on a slant. Then tack veiling to hat.

Many veils are attached to the underside of hat. To do this, block veil on head block; lift veil off block and carefully pin veil around inside of headsize. Put hat on, and gather veil ends up to a becoming angle. Sew veil to inside of headsize; or the front of the veil can be sewn to inside of headsize and the ends gathered up and attached to the top-sides of the hat.

After veil is on the hat, crush a piece of tissue paper and place it under veil in front, pushing veil out, and quickly pass through steam.

There are few set rules for draping veils, and putting a veil on a hat requires real artistic ability, patience and practice.

When putting away your hats with veils, place a crushed piece of tissue paper under veil. This helps veil hold its shape.

Lay pattern on crinoline. Trace with pencil around pattern on crinoline and cut out. Glue crinoline to wrong side of (sized) velvet and cut out. Velvet edges are not turned under, they are left raw.

Two rows of beads are sewn around all edges of medallion and center is heavily beaded.

Block veiling on block; arrange medallion on veil and pin. Take veil off block and tack medallion to veil on underside. Finish with a bow in back.

Now you can enjoy wearing your beautiful whimsy.

Ever Thought Of A Facelift ?

Would you like a facelift? As you get older, you may just find yourself wanting to find answers to look younger and project a more confident attitude, and one method that has captured many people is the facelift.

This cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular as time has gone on, and almost everyone knows someone or knows of someone who has taken the plunge and gone ahead with it. Many people have a great deal of success when it comes to this procedure, but few people know all the facts about it.

If you want something that can make you appear years younger, this may be exactly what you are looking for, but how do you tell? There are many things to consider when you are trying to figure out if this is right for you, so make sure that you do your homework.

Basically, it 's best to realize that a facelift is a surgical procedure with unknown effects. While you will find some surgeons promising you something as a safe bet, remember that there is always a bit of uncertainty when it comes to the results of this visit to the hospital. The official name for this process is rhytidectomy, and through the elimination of excess fat and the tightening of the muscles under the skin, a more smooth and youthful appearance is reached. If sagging skin is found it can be excised in the operation.

The term nip and tuck is in some ways very accurate as it can be seen that excess skin is gathered and put away, revealing a tighter and more robust visage. Through carefully tightened muscles and skin, everything is essentially raised, creating an effect that seems to set back the clock. While the results are fairly stable, putting it ahead of procedures like a Botox injection, please note that this surgery does not reverse or halt the aging process.

You may or may not be a good candidate for this facial reconstruction. Typically, the best person to undergo a facelift is someone in whom the skin of the face and neck have started to sag. Ideally, the skin should still have some elasticity and the bone structure underneath is well defined. A person undergoing this ordeal should be healthy as well, and should always discuss any medications they are taking with their doctor before any medical operation. Smokers are also known to have some complications with the effects of this procedure.

Folks who are most thrilled with facial cosmetic surgery are normally those that know everything about it. However, this will not change your basic appearance the way a procedure like a nose job will.

A rhinoplasty will build up or pare down an existing structure; a rhytidectomy, on the other hand, works on reshaping what is already there and renewing a more youthful appearance. A good surgeon will discuss your expectations and hopes with you and give you a good idea of what to expect and what can be accomplished. While the effect can be dramatic, don't go in expecting miracles ad be practical about what can be achieved.

Unfortunately, don't forget that medical procedures can go wrong and there are risks. While it is a very common operation, and the results are often complication free with a good physician, you should also be aware of some of the chances you are taking. Just like no one has the same anatomy, or reactions, the results of this medical process can differ greatly from person to person. Injury to the nerves that control facial expressions is something to be concerned about, as is infection.

As with any medical procedure, hematoma and severe reactions to anesthetic are sometimes possible, but all of this can be mitigated by having good conversations with your surgeon.

When you are considering a procedure that is this extreme, remember that you should also think about your recovery period. Even in a procedure that goes flawlessly, there is still a very good chance that you will experience some side effects like bruising or swelling, and though these are common enough, you might want to allow some time for recovery.

There are many ways to soften and renew your skin and look younger, and not all of them are as involved as this! Make sure that you look into what anti-aging creams and lotions have to offer.

Always consider that the way to make you more beautiful may not have to be a major expense and it doesn't have to be surgery; it is the one that meets your needs and that gets you whatever you want.

Sunglasses: Necessary Eye Protection and Eminently Stylish

Humans have been protecting their eyes for thousands of years. Protective eyewear has come a long way from when the Inuit of North America cut holes in caribou antlers in order to protect their eyes from snow blindness. Goggles and sunglasses are now designed to protect the wearers eyes from all kinds of dangerous intrusions, both small and large. And increasingly, protective eyewear is designed overwhelmingly as a fashion accessory.

Sunglasses: protecting your eyes, and making them look good at the same time

The primary purpose of sunglasses is to protect your eyes from the harmful ultraviolet radiation given off by the sun. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation can have dire consequences to the health of your eyes, causing problems as diverse as cataracts, photokeratitis, and even a number of eye cancers such as retinoblastoma or melanoma. Fortunately, well made sunglasses can provide adequate protection against the development of all of these problems. The trick for consumers is to find sunglasses that actually provide the desired protection. In order to ensure that you are getting the protection you think you are getting (or that the sunglasses claim to provide), be sure to look for some sort of identifying mark on the sunglasses that shows that the sunglasses have meet the required government regulations for protective standards.

Of course, the great thing about sunglasses is that they can be completely functional and at the same time be completely fashionable. Although there are already a myriad of good reasons why everyone should be wearing sunglasses, the health benefits of wearing sunglasses are well proven and conclusive, and if you have ever tried to drive into the sun you will recognize the importance of using sunglasses to block out the glare. On the other hand, it is good enough for some people to wear sunglasses just because they make them look good. Indeed, sunglasses have an uncanny ability to make anyone immediately cooler just by putting them on.

Sunglasses were first introduced in the 19th century as protective eyewear. It was not until sunglasses were first mass produced and sold to the masses in the 1950s on the beaches in Atlantic City that sunglasses entered the fashion mainstream. Since that time, sunglasses have been a highly sought after accessory, a must have item for any day at the beach. With hipsters like James Dean in the 1950s, sunglasses cemented their image as a cool fashion accessory. Sunglasses became more refined in the 1960s with the oversized styles of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Katherine Hepburn. It says something about the quality of these styles that current fashions are turning back the clock to the original designs. Oversized sunglasses are currently very popular amongst women, and men are even turning back to aviator sunglasses first introduced in the 1930s for American pilots.

As for future developments, designers are starting to think of ways to integrate new technologies into sunglasses. For instance, a number of sunglasses designers have already come out with models that come with an attached earpiece that can either be part of a small MP3 player or part of a Bluetooth enabled cell phone.

Goggles: protecting your eyes

The main purpose of goggles is to protect the wearer 's eyes. Goggles are usually designed with larger projectiles in mind, such as dust or chemicals, or in the case of goggles designed for ball sports, sport balls. This makes goggles immediately different from sunglasses, which are more concerned with protecting the wearer 's eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. Goggles are also different from sunglasses in that they have for the most part failed (or even tried) to make the jump into fashionable life. While this may not be completely true for goggles used in outdoor sports such as skiing or waterskiing, this is certainly true for industrial grade goggles, or even goggles designed for use in sports such as basketball or squash. Of course, there will always be some people who think that wearing blowtorching goggles to school is a good fashion statement.

One way that goggles are becoming more like sunglasses, however, is that they are taking into account more and more the protective function of sunglasses in blocking harmful ultraviolet rays. This can be very important with goggles that are used in outdoor sports such as skiing or waterskiing where the glare of the sun on the snow or water can be debilitating. For this reason, it is important to ensure that when you are buying protective goggles for skiing or waterskiing or the like that the goggles will give you the full protecting from the sun 's harmful rays that you need. Consumers can also expect goggles to make the same technological advances that sunglasses are in terms of the integration of new technology such as mobile telephones and MP3 players.

Clothing Labels and Care Labeling Rules

The most effective marketing tool to instantly grab the attention of customers is product labels, and if it 's a well designed one, it can help increases sales greatly.

However, in the case of clothing labels, the scenario is a bit different. Clothing labels are important but not necessarily the first thing noticed; and once worn, people rarely look at the tag stitched inside their pants or jacket.

But clothing labels serve a practical purpose ... they help the consumer to determine the clothing size, fabric composition and the proper washing procedures.

The care label in a garment is a tag given to the product containing regular maintenance information and instructions. It is affixed in such a manner that it cannot be separated from the product under normal usage. This information is important as it guides the customer, providing rules and regulations for usage and maintenance of the product.

The rules for care labeling were decided upon by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Dec 16th, 1971 and were later amended in 1983.

These rules require the manufacturers and importers of textile wearing apparel and certain piece goods to attach tags stating the regular rules for maintenance of the product.

As per recent updates to the rules in 2000, the section requiring a "reasonable basis" for care instructions has been changed to clarify what is required.

When customers shop for clothing, care requirements play an important role in the decision making process as customers want to know the washing and regular maintenance instructions before purchase.

Different tag strategies reach those consumers looking for the convenience of dry cleaning and those who prefer the ease and economy of buying garments they can wash at home. Clothing labels are a deciding factor when consumers shop for clothing.

This is the reason that at times manufacturers provide more than one set of instructions. With washing options available, the manufacturers can successfully target different consumers. Some manufacturers also use an add-on tag like "For best results, dry clean."

The care labels rule governs and is targeted to the manufacturers and importers of textile wearing apparel, manufacturers and importers of piece goods sold, and organizations that directs and control the textile apparel industry.

It is very crucial that as per the FTC, the clothing labels of a product provide:

1. Complete information and instructions about regular care for the garment and also provide warnings thereby cautioning the customers before purchase.

2. Provide assurance to the customers that if the instructions are carefully followed, you can keep from damaging the garment.

3. Ensure that the product provides specific detailed information for ordinary usage. For example: In case of clothes, the label should specify the washing method, type of water, method used for drying, whether the cloth can be ironed or not, and the temperature of ironing if necessary.

4. It is requisite that manufacturers use commonly used terms in the clothing label such that consumers can easily understand.

5. The manufacturer is only required to list one method of care that is safe.

6. It is required that the domestic manufacturers attach tags to finished products before they are sold, and that they are visible at the point of purchase. If in case it is not visible, it is required to appear on the outside of the package.

If a garment is manufactured and made up of several components, then there should be reliable evidence supporting the statement that the garment will not be damaged when cleaned as directed. Industry experience and expertise can solve most care worries before a consumer purchase.

Cufflinks That Cause A little Commotion

Let’s face the facts; if you’re looking for something different in men’s fashion accessories, you have to look long and hard. Even the retailers are commenting on the generic nature of many brands. And the press are having a field day, there’s a lot to write about, but it doesn’t make it any easier for the customer.

Well they’re a few well know brands and lesser known to, that are producing collections that defy common trends and you won’t necessarily find them hanging sadly with all the other dots and stripes that just rolled off the conveyer belt.

As brands are bought, sold and corporatized, the essence that sparked their beginning is lost, naturally. But there are always budding designers to step up to the blocks and start a new cycle. They’re not necessarily young, some designers bud later in life. Vivienne Westwood is at the peak of her creativity at 65.

Quietly, Quietly
Ian Flaherty quietly arrived on the market and produced some beautifully formed English Pewter cufflinks, giving life to lifeless forms. There is a horse and rider in breathless pursuit of the unfortunate Fox, the Mallard and Partridge, Pheasant, and Trout, all brought to still life by the artistic prowess of Ian Flaherty. You can surf the net and trod the high streets, but you’ll be hard pressed to find anything that compares with Ian’s latest work.

The Truth
Veritas is a Latin word meaning “truth” and the truth is Veritas Gifts manufacture a range of elegant men’s fashion accessories, from cufflinks to collar stiffeners. And they’re engineered to take the load; just a brief handle will satisfy your senses and make you feel immediately you’re in touch with stylish quality.

The Name
Vivienne Westwood, driven by an endless creative imagination, has been applying key design principles proportionately to all her collections. Combining colour, pattern, texture, proportionately, has become the trademark of all her design work, from crockery to clothing, from silk tiesto evening gowns for Royals. The Orb is now an internationally recognised brand symbol, with a difference.

A Swank History
Swank Inc a popular designer and manufacturer of men’s cufflinks were incorporated on April 17, 1936. When cufflinkspeaked in the 1960’s they were making 12 million a year.
Even though these were aimed at the lowest end of the market, retailing for an average of $2.50 a pair, that still adds up to a lot of men wearing cufflinks. These days the figure is closer to 200,000, but cufflinks are making a strong comeback with gross sales having increased consistently over the last ten years, while the French cuff continues to be the most prestigious type of shirt. The most expensive cufflinks ever sold were a pair given to the soon-to-be King Edward VIII by his later wife Wallis Simpson. These featured diamonds set in platinum and sold at auction for $440,000.

Who’s Nathan?
Nathan Tim is a new name to the fashion industry, armed with a mission and a collection of floral Cufflinks that reflect the brilliant hues of nature, showcased in rigid Murano Glass. The flowers captured within, reflect not just the timeless beauty of its petals, but also a richly textured history of fine glass making, stemming back many hundreds of years. Simplicity: The Simon Carter philosophy
Simon Carter’s reputation stems from his revolutionary approach to men’s fashion accessories design following his introductory men’s brooches, in the mid to late 80’s. Some of his original designs are classified vintage. Simon Carter 's cufflinks maintain a philosophy of simplicity in his designs; simple, functional, without loosing their stylish edge. His cufflinks not only firm to cuff, they glean a touch of elegance and frame perfectly an object of expression. This lovely display of style and engineering will harmonise with any outfit, formal or casual, here an important function inherent in Simon’s philosophy of simplicity, a cufflink for all occasions.

And Fred Bennett
A name familiar in fashion accessory circles, he’s been around a while and so have his cufflinks. They don’t resemble originality and perhaps the essence once prevalent has been lost as the business becomes more business like. Never the less the new range is compelling enough.

And Now Timothy Everest
A Savile Row Tailor in Spitalfields and creator of the modern Spitalfields flower pattern. His underground approach takes him down an infrequent road travelled -- many follow. In a career spanning the rise and fall of countless fashion cycles, from the hazy days of Tommy Nutter to the Creative force behind the rebirth of British fashion icon Daks. Miniscule perhaps, but, Introducing a range of cufflinks would conclude nicely a growing range of signature accessories. And it’s on the cards.
