How To Easily Decide On The Right Fashion Designer School For You And Your Talents

Whether you are going into fashion design, merchandising or fashion marketing, you are going to want to go into fashion designer school. There are schools all over the United States and Europe from which to choose. Choosing the right fashion designer school is no different than choosing the right college. You want to look at the curriculum, the alumni, the price and what they can offer to teach you. Once you have chosen a few fashion designer schools that appeal to you, you can begin the application process. Again, this is just like choosing a college. It is highly competitive and not everyone gets in.

If you are particularly talented or wealthy, you may have your choice of schools to which you can attend. If you are like 99 percent of the rest of the population, however, you will probably go where you can get accepted and to a school which you can afford. It does not matter. While you want to aspire to get into the best school, the most important thing is that when you do get to fashion designer school, you learn as much as you can about your craft.

Fashion design is a very competitive business with many different avenues. You can study to be a designer, a merchandiser, a marketer or even a model at these schools. If you have aspirations of becoming a famous designer, do your best to learn everything you can no matter which school you attend. You may even do better at a smaller school that can give you more individualized attention.

If you have exceptional talent and have won any Junior designer awards, you may be eligible for a scholarship to certain designer schools. You should look into this before you begin your application process. If you admire a certain designer and they are an alumni from a certain school, you can write to them and ask them how they felt about the school and tell them you are thinking of applying at this school. Ask them other schools they recommend. You can actually do this with several designers. You will probably not hear from those that are big names, but those who are up and coming may be more than willing to help you out.

Visit each of the schools, if possible, and observe the campus. Will you be able to work there? Fashion design demands creativity. Creativity demands a certain environment. You want to make sure that the environment will enhance your creative spirit and not stifle it.

Most of all, you want to make sure that you can afford the tuition to designer school. There are many ways to do this. If someone really wants to attend school, there is nothing stopping them, not even money. Student loans are available, as are grants. Look into every avenue you can. Speak to your mentors about different financial avenues you can take.

If at all possible, try to get a job in a fashion house, even if it is just as a cleaner. Here you can learn a bit about the trade and also get to know those higher in the field. They may be willing to not only steer you to the right school, but mentor you as well. Best of all, you will probably have a job when you come out.

If you aspire for a career in fashion design, do not let anything stop you. Apply to as many schools as you can and take the offer that you can get. Continue to create, continue to write to those who you admire and learn to network. School is only one stepping stone to a successful career. It may open a few doors on a resume. But the talent is what gets you through the doors and into the front offices. If you have the talent, do not let anything stand in your way.

Making Your Very Own Hats

These little veil hats, so very popular today, are appropriate for all occasions. They are light and airy, youthful and very flattering. While you will feel almost hatless, they still give you that smart, feminine, finished dash that every well-dressed woman seeks.

They can be made elaborate for dressy occasions, using sequins, beads, flowers or feathers; or very plain for casual wear, using velvet bows, etc.

Material Required

It takes 28" of veiling - either fine face veiling or coarse chicken wire - to make an even all around whimsey.

Blocking Veils And Whimseys

Method For Veiling

Lap and join veiling ends, one over the other, and sew with a fine running stitch. Then gather around one side of veiling, pull thread tight and fasten thread. Pin gathered end to top of head block with a push-pin and gently pull veiling toward bottom of block to smooth out gathers. Pass quickly through steam to shape veiling to block

Method For Chicken Wire

The same procedure is used for chicken wire, except for joining the ends. Lap chicken wire over 1" and match diagonal squares. Tie-tack each diagonal square instead of a running stitch. Have seam, in back. Trimming is optional.

Method For Draped Whimsey:

If you want a whimsey with a short back, do not join veiling ends. Gather one side of veiling and pin to block. Carefully drape veiling around block, pulling ends up in back on each side to within about 2" of top, and sew together Carefully steam front of veil to fit block. Arrange trimming on top of veil and use small velvet bows to finish off ends of veiling you have draped up to top of block.

Attaching Veils:

Usually it is wise to block all veils a little, using steam sparingly. Blocking gives the veil that rounded, professional look and makes it stand away from the face. Almost all short face veils require 2/3 yd. of veiling. After you have shaped the veil, pin center of veil to hat. Put the hat on, and gather ends of veil up to sides or back of hat on a slant. Then tack veiling to hat.

Many veils are attached to the underside of hat. To do this, block veil on head block; lift veil off block and carefully pin veil around inside of headsize. Put hat on, and gather veil ends up to a becoming angle. Sew veil to inside of headsize; or the front of the veil can be sewn to inside of headsize and the ends gathered up and attached to the top-sides of the hat.

After veil is on the hat, crush a piece of tissue paper and place it under veil in front, pushing veil out, and quickly pass through steam.

There are few set rules for draping veils, and putting a veil on a hat requires real artistic ability, patience and practice.

When putting away your hats with veils, place a crushed piece of tissue paper under veil. This helps veil hold its shape.

Lay pattern on crinoline. Trace with pencil around pattern on crinoline and cut out. Glue crinoline to wrong side of (sized) velvet and cut out. Velvet edges are not turned under, they are left raw.

Two rows of beads are sewn around all edges of medallion and center is heavily beaded.

Block veiling on block; arrange medallion on veil and pin. Take veil off block and tack medallion to veil on underside. Finish with a bow in back.

Now you can enjoy wearing your beautiful whimsy.

Ever Thought Of A Facelift ?

Would you like a facelift? As you get older, you may just find yourself wanting to find answers to look younger and project a more confident attitude, and one method that has captured many people is the facelift.

This cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular as time has gone on, and almost everyone knows someone or knows of someone who has taken the plunge and gone ahead with it. Many people have a great deal of success when it comes to this procedure, but few people know all the facts about it.

If you want something that can make you appear years younger, this may be exactly what you are looking for, but how do you tell? There are many things to consider when you are trying to figure out if this is right for you, so make sure that you do your homework.

Basically, it 's best to realize that a facelift is a surgical procedure with unknown effects. While you will find some surgeons promising you something as a safe bet, remember that there is always a bit of uncertainty when it comes to the results of this visit to the hospital. The official name for this process is rhytidectomy, and through the elimination of excess fat and the tightening of the muscles under the skin, a more smooth and youthful appearance is reached. If sagging skin is found it can be excised in the operation.

The term nip and tuck is in some ways very accurate as it can be seen that excess skin is gathered and put away, revealing a tighter and more robust visage. Through carefully tightened muscles and skin, everything is essentially raised, creating an effect that seems to set back the clock. While the results are fairly stable, putting it ahead of procedures like a Botox injection, please note that this surgery does not reverse or halt the aging process.

You may or may not be a good candidate for this facial reconstruction. Typically, the best person to undergo a facelift is someone in whom the skin of the face and neck have started to sag. Ideally, the skin should still have some elasticity and the bone structure underneath is well defined. A person undergoing this ordeal should be healthy as well, and should always discuss any medications they are taking with their doctor before any medical operation. Smokers are also known to have some complications with the effects of this procedure.

Folks who are most thrilled with facial cosmetic surgery are normally those that know everything about it. However, this will not change your basic appearance the way a procedure like a nose job will.

A rhinoplasty will build up or pare down an existing structure; a rhytidectomy, on the other hand, works on reshaping what is already there and renewing a more youthful appearance. A good surgeon will discuss your expectations and hopes with you and give you a good idea of what to expect and what can be accomplished. While the effect can be dramatic, don't go in expecting miracles ad be practical about what can be achieved.

Unfortunately, don't forget that medical procedures can go wrong and there are risks. While it is a very common operation, and the results are often complication free with a good physician, you should also be aware of some of the chances you are taking. Just like no one has the same anatomy, or reactions, the results of this medical process can differ greatly from person to person. Injury to the nerves that control facial expressions is something to be concerned about, as is infection.

As with any medical procedure, hematoma and severe reactions to anesthetic are sometimes possible, but all of this can be mitigated by having good conversations with your surgeon.

When you are considering a procedure that is this extreme, remember that you should also think about your recovery period. Even in a procedure that goes flawlessly, there is still a very good chance that you will experience some side effects like bruising or swelling, and though these are common enough, you might want to allow some time for recovery.

There are many ways to soften and renew your skin and look younger, and not all of them are as involved as this! Make sure that you look into what anti-aging creams and lotions have to offer.

Always consider that the way to make you more beautiful may not have to be a major expense and it doesn't have to be surgery; it is the one that meets your needs and that gets you whatever you want.

Sunglasses: Necessary Eye Protection and Eminently Stylish

Humans have been protecting their eyes for thousands of years. Protective eyewear has come a long way from when the Inuit of North America cut holes in caribou antlers in order to protect their eyes from snow blindness. Goggles and sunglasses are now designed to protect the wearers eyes from all kinds of dangerous intrusions, both small and large. And increasingly, protective eyewear is designed overwhelmingly as a fashion accessory.

Sunglasses: protecting your eyes, and making them look good at the same time

The primary purpose of sunglasses is to protect your eyes from the harmful ultraviolet radiation given off by the sun. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation can have dire consequences to the health of your eyes, causing problems as diverse as cataracts, photokeratitis, and even a number of eye cancers such as retinoblastoma or melanoma. Fortunately, well made sunglasses can provide adequate protection against the development of all of these problems. The trick for consumers is to find sunglasses that actually provide the desired protection. In order to ensure that you are getting the protection you think you are getting (or that the sunglasses claim to provide), be sure to look for some sort of identifying mark on the sunglasses that shows that the sunglasses have meet the required government regulations for protective standards.

Of course, the great thing about sunglasses is that they can be completely functional and at the same time be completely fashionable. Although there are already a myriad of good reasons why everyone should be wearing sunglasses, the health benefits of wearing sunglasses are well proven and conclusive, and if you have ever tried to drive into the sun you will recognize the importance of using sunglasses to block out the glare. On the other hand, it is good enough for some people to wear sunglasses just because they make them look good. Indeed, sunglasses have an uncanny ability to make anyone immediately cooler just by putting them on.

Sunglasses were first introduced in the 19th century as protective eyewear. It was not until sunglasses were first mass produced and sold to the masses in the 1950s on the beaches in Atlantic City that sunglasses entered the fashion mainstream. Since that time, sunglasses have been a highly sought after accessory, a must have item for any day at the beach. With hipsters like James Dean in the 1950s, sunglasses cemented their image as a cool fashion accessory. Sunglasses became more refined in the 1960s with the oversized styles of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Katherine Hepburn. It says something about the quality of these styles that current fashions are turning back the clock to the original designs. Oversized sunglasses are currently very popular amongst women, and men are even turning back to aviator sunglasses first introduced in the 1930s for American pilots.

As for future developments, designers are starting to think of ways to integrate new technologies into sunglasses. For instance, a number of sunglasses designers have already come out with models that come with an attached earpiece that can either be part of a small MP3 player or part of a Bluetooth enabled cell phone.

Goggles: protecting your eyes

The main purpose of goggles is to protect the wearer 's eyes. Goggles are usually designed with larger projectiles in mind, such as dust or chemicals, or in the case of goggles designed for ball sports, sport balls. This makes goggles immediately different from sunglasses, which are more concerned with protecting the wearer 's eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. Goggles are also different from sunglasses in that they have for the most part failed (or even tried) to make the jump into fashionable life. While this may not be completely true for goggles used in outdoor sports such as skiing or waterskiing, this is certainly true for industrial grade goggles, or even goggles designed for use in sports such as basketball or squash. Of course, there will always be some people who think that wearing blowtorching goggles to school is a good fashion statement.

One way that goggles are becoming more like sunglasses, however, is that they are taking into account more and more the protective function of sunglasses in blocking harmful ultraviolet rays. This can be very important with goggles that are used in outdoor sports such as skiing or waterskiing where the glare of the sun on the snow or water can be debilitating. For this reason, it is important to ensure that when you are buying protective goggles for skiing or waterskiing or the like that the goggles will give you the full protecting from the sun 's harmful rays that you need. Consumers can also expect goggles to make the same technological advances that sunglasses are in terms of the integration of new technology such as mobile telephones and MP3 players.

Clothing Labels and Care Labeling Rules

The most effective marketing tool to instantly grab the attention of customers is product labels, and if it 's a well designed one, it can help increases sales greatly.

However, in the case of clothing labels, the scenario is a bit different. Clothing labels are important but not necessarily the first thing noticed; and once worn, people rarely look at the tag stitched inside their pants or jacket.

But clothing labels serve a practical purpose ... they help the consumer to determine the clothing size, fabric composition and the proper washing procedures.

The care label in a garment is a tag given to the product containing regular maintenance information and instructions. It is affixed in such a manner that it cannot be separated from the product under normal usage. This information is important as it guides the customer, providing rules and regulations for usage and maintenance of the product.

The rules for care labeling were decided upon by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Dec 16th, 1971 and were later amended in 1983.

These rules require the manufacturers and importers of textile wearing apparel and certain piece goods to attach tags stating the regular rules for maintenance of the product.

As per recent updates to the rules in 2000, the section requiring a "reasonable basis" for care instructions has been changed to clarify what is required.

When customers shop for clothing, care requirements play an important role in the decision making process as customers want to know the washing and regular maintenance instructions before purchase.

Different tag strategies reach those consumers looking for the convenience of dry cleaning and those who prefer the ease and economy of buying garments they can wash at home. Clothing labels are a deciding factor when consumers shop for clothing.

This is the reason that at times manufacturers provide more than one set of instructions. With washing options available, the manufacturers can successfully target different consumers. Some manufacturers also use an add-on tag like "For best results, dry clean."

The care labels rule governs and is targeted to the manufacturers and importers of textile wearing apparel, manufacturers and importers of piece goods sold, and organizations that directs and control the textile apparel industry.

It is very crucial that as per the FTC, the clothing labels of a product provide:

1. Complete information and instructions about regular care for the garment and also provide warnings thereby cautioning the customers before purchase.

2. Provide assurance to the customers that if the instructions are carefully followed, you can keep from damaging the garment.

3. Ensure that the product provides specific detailed information for ordinary usage. For example: In case of clothes, the label should specify the washing method, type of water, method used for drying, whether the cloth can be ironed or not, and the temperature of ironing if necessary.

4. It is requisite that manufacturers use commonly used terms in the clothing label such that consumers can easily understand.

5. The manufacturer is only required to list one method of care that is safe.

6. It is required that the domestic manufacturers attach tags to finished products before they are sold, and that they are visible at the point of purchase. If in case it is not visible, it is required to appear on the outside of the package.

If a garment is manufactured and made up of several components, then there should be reliable evidence supporting the statement that the garment will not be damaged when cleaned as directed. Industry experience and expertise can solve most care worries before a consumer purchase.

Cufflinks That Cause A little Commotion

Let’s face the facts; if you’re looking for something different in men’s fashion accessories, you have to look long and hard. Even the retailers are commenting on the generic nature of many brands. And the press are having a field day, there’s a lot to write about, but it doesn’t make it any easier for the customer.

Well they’re a few well know brands and lesser known to, that are producing collections that defy common trends and you won’t necessarily find them hanging sadly with all the other dots and stripes that just rolled off the conveyer belt.

As brands are bought, sold and corporatized, the essence that sparked their beginning is lost, naturally. But there are always budding designers to step up to the blocks and start a new cycle. They’re not necessarily young, some designers bud later in life. Vivienne Westwood is at the peak of her creativity at 65.

Quietly, Quietly
Ian Flaherty quietly arrived on the market and produced some beautifully formed English Pewter cufflinks, giving life to lifeless forms. There is a horse and rider in breathless pursuit of the unfortunate Fox, the Mallard and Partridge, Pheasant, and Trout, all brought to still life by the artistic prowess of Ian Flaherty. You can surf the net and trod the high streets, but you’ll be hard pressed to find anything that compares with Ian’s latest work.

The Truth
Veritas is a Latin word meaning “truth” and the truth is Veritas Gifts manufacture a range of elegant men’s fashion accessories, from cufflinks to collar stiffeners. And they’re engineered to take the load; just a brief handle will satisfy your senses and make you feel immediately you’re in touch with stylish quality.

A Swank History
Swank Inc a popular designer and manufacturer of men’s cufflinks were incorporated on April 17, 1936. When cufflinkspeaked in the 1960’s they were making 12 million a year.
Even though these were aimed at the lowest end of the market, retailing for an average of $2.50 a pair, that still adds up to a lot of men wearing cufflinks. These days the figure is closer to 200,000, but cufflinks are making a strong comeback with gross sales having increased consistently over the last ten years, while the French cuff continues to be the most prestigious type of shirt. The most expensive cufflinks ever sold were a pair given to the soon-to-be King Edward VIII by his later wife Wallis Simpson. These featured diamonds set in platinum and sold at auction for $440,000.

Simplicity: The Simon Carter philosophy
Simon Carter’s reputation stems from his revolutionary approach to men’s fashion accessories design following his introductory men’s brooches, in the mid to late 80’s. Some of his original designs are classified vintage. Simon Carter 's cufflinks maintain a philosophy of simplicity in his designs; simple, functional, without loosing their stylish edge. The Great Classic Plimsoll Debate

Sports shoes are, these days, a whole multi-million pound industry with laboratories, institutes and technologies all their own. What 's wrong with the good old plimsoll is what I say.

That first day at school, where the smell of rubber plimsolls permeated everything including your lunch is an experience that kids these days just don't get. They're more concerned with whether they are wearing the right sports shoe according to the fashion stakes than anything else.

So, let 's take a look at the modern day sports shoes and see how the old fashioned plimsoll compares. Shock absorption is an important aspect of the modern day sports shoe, according to scientists. Have these people seen the rubber bumper you get round the toe of a plimsoll? You can kick a chair leg or stub your toe on any pointy surface and this little rubber bumper absorbs all the shock. The plimsoll is the inspiration behind many a fairground ride.

Lightness is another aspect athletes want from a sports shoe to make them go faster. Plimsolls are made of lightweight fabric without all the extra added gizmos. Personally, I think this is mind over matter. Put a go faster stripe on the side and they'll think they can run faster, no matter how heavy the trainer. And let 's face it, just how heavy can they get?

Stability. How about stability? I've been completely trolleyed in these plimsolls of mine and stood upright longer than any drunk in a modern sports shoe. It 's something to do with that amazing rubber grip on the bottom. Once on, they ain't going anywhere. Not that easy to detach once they have that one way grip on your skin but they're stability on the feet of a self confessed alcoholic are beyond compare.

Durability is something I don't understand being called for in today 's sports shoes. According to recent studies, trainers need to last a maximum of 2.4 weeks before they become obsolete and are replaced with a newer model. God forbid anyone should be seen out in the old version. You'll know the embarrassed individuals who are struggling to keep up - they're the ones with their feet tucked under their seats in a bid to keep their hideous footwear hidden.

Styling is something that determines your place in sports shoe society and plimsoll manufacturers are well aware of this. Hence their different designs. You can have lace up or elastic fastening, black or white, large rubber strips covering the toe or a simple bumper. We have choice - what more is needed? That 's the trouble with the generation of today - too much choice.

Emerging into my early puberty, this was the time when no-one would be seen dead in trainers that looked like they were new. Heaven only knows the ridicule one would receive being seen out in brilliant white sports shoes! Nowadays, it 's all about the whiteness, the brighter the better. Of course, if you keep up with the 2.4 week scenario, dirty trainers are not something you will suffer with but for the rest of us, plimsolls are well ahead of the game with 's hoe whitener' that we can paint on, bringing footwear back to its original condition.

And now we have the 'on road' and 'off road' sports shoes. What the hell! Do the off roaders come with mud guards and a customised shoe horn for extracting your feet from mud pools? Or the 'on roaders' with a licence plate and tax disc holder?

Of course, with all manner of clothing and footwear, there are age distinctions. There comes a time when the classic black plimsoll with elastic strap across the foot just has to give way to the Dunlop Greenflash that your dad wears. But you won't regret this - comfort replaced with comfort, there is no way to go wrong.

The History of Sewing and Trimming

Even in centuries past, people have always desired fashion in one form or another that was more than simply functional, but had traits of beauty as well. While you will find that a dress will cover up and keep a person warm, there is a world of difference from a plain dress and a dress that is truly stunning.

In times past, fashion designs were elevated from boring to beautiful by using the art of trimming. Fashion items such as braids, ribbons, lace, even tassels are all excellent examples of trimming that were placed in high fashion regard back in the 18th century. Compare this to today 's fashion, where decorations such as these are regarded as tacky on our modern clothing. This fashion change is due to the fact that the evolution of sewing and trimming in the last century are closely linked.

Trimming as High Fashion

Elaborate Sewing and trimming done by skilled hands were regarded as signs of status, especially in Victorian fashion, where a person had to look just right so that they could be accepted as a member of high society of that era.

This was a time before the introduction of the sewing machine, hence all these embellishments to the clothing were accomplished by hand. The effect of this was that people had to pay by the hour for a seamstress to complete all the sewing and trimming for each garment which made it very expensive. The result of this economic effect was that a dress with a lot of trim added to it became a status symbol. since it represented an individual that had the financial means to afford such a garment.

Enter the Sewing Machine

At the turn of the century, sewing machines such as the ones manufactured by the Singer Company grew in popularity and made sewing a much easier job then it previously was. The simple, easy to utilize design of the sewing machine made the job of sewing and trimming more complex garments at home a snap.

The most obvious effect of this was that when these machines became more popular with the masses, they slowly declined in popularity with the people of the upper classes. The end result of this was that the popularity of sewing and trimming in the field of fashion were inversely proportional; that is to say, as one rose in popularity, the other fell.

Step Into The Modern Era

Since the decade of the 1930 's , trimming in its many forms has stayed fairly low in popularity. Some noteworthy exceptions have been items such as fringed vests, manufactured in imitation country styles, which was very well liked in the decade of the 1990 's and also popular with elaborately trimmed home fashion in the 1980 's

However, given the era since it 's last decline, trimming has begun to appear again in expensive fashions, including the esteemed clothing manufactured by the House of Chanel as well as other fashion houses, which have created a market that is based on haute couture. This primarily consists of high fashion as well as custom clothing designs.

This brings up full circle back to the traditions of the Victorian ages. with dresses made from hand sewing and trimming that is complex and elaborate. It appears that as long as there is a market for high quality, handcrafted clothing, there will always be a place for trimming somewhere within the fashion world.

The Ultimate Essential Items for Your Wardrobe

Each one of us has had one of those days where we have opened to wardrobe, to be confronted with a rail full of clothes, but still have nothing to wear. What are the ultimate wardrobe essentials that will mean it is easier to look smart for a meeting, as well as having something to wear for an unexpected night out? With the following fashion advice for those wardrobe essentials, it is possible to have classic pieces that will mean you always have something to wear.

First off every girl needs the perfect pair of jeans. To be the most versatile they should be a darker wash as these are the most flattering and can be dressed up smarter than a light wash. Get a pair that fit you snugly, but not so that it digs in and you get that dreaded 'muffin top'. Be aware of the pockets when choosing your pair, the larger the pockets and lower down, the smaller and more pert your rear will look.

You will read everywhere that a classic white shirt is a must. Although in principle this is an excellent idea, not every complexion suits white. Olive skins can wear bright white however some people may suit light beige or ecru and very pale skin should go for a warmer cream. Pick carefully as the right shade will brighten up your skin whereas the wrong shade will wash you out. Your shirt should be well cut and flatter your shape. For maximum wear for any occasion, pick one without too much detail, you can add interest with up to date jewellery instead.

A well cut suit in a neutral dark colour, that is a classic cut and not high fashion, will see you through many occasions as it can be dressed up or down with accessories. Trouser suits are more adaptable than skirt suits, but whichever you pick make sure that the skirt or trousers look great without the jacket so they can be worn separately. It is best if you can buy one jacket and two bottoms as you will wear the bottom part of the suit more than the jacket.

A scarf can pull an outfit together and make you look polished. The variety you pick will of course need to match your personal style. If you prefer a classic look then a silk scarf is your best bet and it is worth investing in the best you can afford. If your style is more casual then a longer scarf can smarten up a jacket. Before buying take a look at the colours that are prominent in your wardrobe and choose one with those colours mixed in.

A good pair of smart shoes will make you walk tall and give you confidence. They do not necessarily have to be black, but again a neutral colour is the most versatile. The most important aspect to consider is can you actually walk in them easily? High fashion stiletto shoes are fun but a failsafe go anywhere pair must be comfortable.

Maybe a cliche, but the little black dress is the answer to so many parties where you want to look sophisticated. Go for one that flatters your figure and is not too trendy, so leave dresses that have too many sequins and sparkle or ruffles. A classic dress will last years and can be brought straight up to date with fashion forward shoes and accessories.

Finally a timeless coat will see you through many winters and should be a carefully considered investment as it is likely to be one of the most expensive items in your wardrobe. The coat should ideally be a hardwearing dark coloured fabric and should again not have too much detail going on that could go out of fashion any minute. The most versatile length is just on the knee as this will cover most skirt lengths but also look good with trousers and flat or high heels. With these few fashion advice tips and a keen eye, you should not have any more dreaded moments of having nothing to wear.

Try that old white magic with incense and Bayleaves.

HI would like to share with you a ritual I do every New Year 's that is quite involved and requires a lot of thought and meditation time. It is derived from an ancient Greek ritual for prosperity and fertility. As you may recall, ancient Mediterranean Kings and Queens used to wear garlands of bay leaves (as well as olive leaves) as crowns. Bay leaves, and often bayberry leaves, are often used in Alexandrian magic as well, as well to draw success in business and finances. I like this ritual because first of all it is very "white" and it also involves the writing down of your wishes. The writing down of your wishes on 108 bay leaves works in the same way as a positive affirmation. The stating of your goals and desires allows you to properly manifest them in real life. Every year I pull out my old bay leaves and sort through them and I am always astounded by how many of my wishes have actually been granted.
For this you will need:
• a blank check
• a gold or silver pen (but a green will do if you can't get those colours)
• Cinnamon incense
• a green, an orange or a yellow or GOLD candle (whichever colour attracts you the most)
• Orange oil, bergamot or success oil or Horn of Plenty oil
• a package of bay leaves (whole)
• an envelope
• pretty ribbon
This ritual is for multiple wishes and is best done when you have at least two hours to spare in meditation and quiet. It is best done within ten days before or after the New Year 's . After the New Years or on New Year 's Day is preferable.
First of all, take a bath in your favourite bubbles (Calgon, take me away!) and put yourself in a calm and peaceful state. You can play some steady rhythmic music if you like - anything that puts you into a bit of a trance (chanting, new age.)
The first thing you are going to do is light the cinnamon incense. Cinnamon is related to the planet Mercury and symbolizes communication and quick results. Then I want you to scratch your name and birth date on the side of the candle. Put the candle plate that is wrapped in tin foil (to represent the moon).
Then I want you to take the blank cheque and write the amount of money that you think you would like to make this year or the amount you need to get out of trouble using a gold or silver pen. Make the cheque payable to the order of yourself and be sure to add a few more bucks in there as fun money.
The idea here is to make this cheque as pretty as possible. Decorate it with lucky symbols such as dollar signs, hearts and flowers so this money is brought to you with a sense of joy. Once you are happy with your cheque, and have signed and endorsed it and everything, I want you to anoint all four corners of the cheque with one or more of the oils mentioned above. To make it even more personal add a dab of your personal perfume.
Place the cheque you wrote to yourself under the dish. Light the candle and say:
"In the name of the I Am that I Am I pray to the Archangels and their legions of light, I pray to the blessed Virgin and her angels of compassion for the following assistance and blessings"
Now open the package of bay leaves. There are two ways of doing this spell -- in a really BIG way or in a more efficient manner. It depends how much time you have. When I did this on my birthday I used 108 bay leaves (or fragments of leaves because sometimes they crumble in the package) but you can use less if you like. I used 108 because it is a real magic number, but you can just do as many bay leaves as you can.
As the candle burns and the incense is burning too, I want you to write on each bay leaf, a single word that represents each thing you would like to happen in the near future. For instance, if you are looking for immigration status thing write the word "Citizenship" on the bay leaf. If you owe the dentist money write, "dentist bill paid". If you would like a lover to return write "lover returns". Each leaf has a wish written on it. On the leaf after write "high paying job", on the next one "safety", "security", "soulmate"... Place the leaves in a circle around the candle in the shape of wreathe so that it looks pretty and keep on doing this until you are all wished out. Your candle should be circled by bay leaves each with a wish written on it.
This usually takes most people quite a while, and before they know it, the candle has burned down.
If you finish writing the leaves early that is ok too, keep burning the candle down to the bottom (so don't get a candle that is too big.) After you have written a wish too, it helps if you "let go of it" and resign yourself to the fact that the higher powers are taking care of it.
After you are done writing all of your wishes, I want you to say:
"I consider this done in this hour, in full power according to the will of God, helping all and harming none Amen."
After the candle burns out, I want you to take the leaves and the cheque and put them in an envelope. Seal the envelope, wrap it with a nice ribbon, kiss it and put it in a safe place. Don't look at this again for a year. Just rest assured that all is unfolding in the Universe as it should.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever… but not if you try these stunts out!

1. Tattoos.

Tattoos used to be the colouring of soldiers, sailors, mafiosi and punk rockers. About ten years ago, they became fashionable. The lower-middle classes started taking them up. Unfortunately, unlike last years' shoes, tattoos cannot be taken to the thrift shop and disposed of.

To a certain class of person, tattoos are 'cool'. To another, they are a graffito on the temple of the soul. They mark a woman definitively as lower class, alienated, depressed, and a bit daft. They are also a handy way to identify one absolutely to the authorities. This shows how stupid some crooks are. The same goes for piercings. My family are farmers. I associate nose rings with bulls, and piercings with cattle tags. They are a haven of dirt, infection, and their openings look unsightly.

With tattoos and piercings, before you have opened your mouth, you have already typed yourself to people you meet.

2. Highlights and streaks.

Are you blonde, or brunette? Make up your mind! These might have been novel ten years ago. Now they just look common. Not all gentlemen prefer blondes. A healthy head of untinted brunette or raven dark hair is a pleasant novelty these days.

It is true that blondes have more fun. I used to be one! Most people on the planet are dark. A non-blonde with blonde hair looks 'interesting'.Now this fashion is done to death, however. If they are doing it in Romford, it is buried!

3. Big hoop earrings.

Unmistakably part of the wardrobe of the gypsy. This is fine if you are one. Strangely popular. Perhaps they are to make the wearer 's head look smaller. Add them to the features above, and an unattractive type emerges.

4. Binge drinking.

Binge drinking, squawking and falling over in the street is hilarious if you are the one doing it. If you are the spectator, it is less so.

5. Visible G-string.

This is erotic, no doubt about it. Unless you have not the figure to pull it, off. Likely to provoke a reaction of Oh, help, that’s so EUKkkk.' when adorning the pasty, blemished posterior of the 'full-figured' young lady. Bad diet, no exercise, five-pints-a-night, and then 'peek-a-boo!' Agggh! I used to wonder why so many saucily-dressed young ladies walked the streets hatchet-faced. Now I know. Half are trying to ward off unwanted vulgar advances from men, the other half are annoyed they are not getting any! There is nothing sexy about contrived, blatant and vulgar eroticism. What is erotic is what seems to be an accident. 'A glimpse of stocking is something quite shocking' etc. Likely to irritate female co-workers also. Assuming your company allows such clothing. It doesn't? I wonder why?

6. Swearing.

Your gentleman friends might find this amusing, to your face. What they think in private is another matter. Habitual swearing is another sign of a depressed, angry person. It is unattractive. The more you do it, the more it corrodes your subconscious.

7. Breast Augmentation.

Also known as a 'boob job'. These look fine, from a distance. Compared to a natural pair, they look odd. They are to real breasts what a transsexual is to a 'red hot mama'; no competition. Up close, they are just not as good as the real thing. A perfectly functional piece of equipment has been turned into a cartoon joke, with possible long-term medical consequences. Some men like small breasts. Beauty is a matter of proportion. Some women are neurotic about their appearance; nothing will please them.

A good example is ...

8. Disappearing Eyebrows.

They get plucked away to nothingness, and then get drawn or tattooed back in. And this is better? One can end up looking freakish, even clown-like. Loss of hair suggests illness. Plucking out one 's hair is often a sign of mental illness. Girls, desist! Do not try to gild the lily!

IMPORTANT NOTE: There are people who will encourage you in the above. They will say you look lovely. Misery loves company, and some people delight in the fall of others.Be your own woman. Stand back from yourself, your life and your surroundings, and decide your own destiny.

Making your watch keep in tune and time with fashion

If you haven't lived under a rock for the past few decades, then you surely know that Rolex stands for luxurious precision timekeeping, and you know that Timex is the premier name in inexpensive, reliable timekeeping. The vast area between the two, however, offers the widest selection of watches-in terms of function, fashion and price.

We're all creatures of habit, and if one watch has served us well for years, it 's natural that we gravitate toward the same brand and design each time we purchase a new watch. Cowboy Hats: Different and the Same

Hardly has there ever been one piece of attire that has so successfully and so consistently represented a group of people as does the Cowboy Hat. Not very many things in American History speak so loudly of a time and of a culture as does this icon.

Because the cowboy hat has not really been around that long there was a time in the development of the western US before the cowboy hat arrived. In that time the ranchers and the cowboys of the time wore hats that were really leftovers for past lives. Some symbolized lifestyles and some occupations or countries of birth. With the cowboy hats invention that all changed.

After the cowboy hat was popularized it was known everywhere but there were still enough differences in the styles of the hat to make is a sort of marker for where the wearer may be from or at the least where he got his hat.

You may have heard the phrase function before form and in the case of the cowboy hat it really has both. Initially the hat was all about function but over time it has moved more and more into the fashion arena and toward a socially symbolic icon.

If you were to place a cowboy hat invented in 1985 by John Stetson side by side with a hat of today you would be able to tell very little difference. He sold those first hats in Central City Colorado and even though people often refer to cowboy hats a Stetsons what they are vocalizing is the brand of hat and not just what kind of hat it is.

Even today the cowboy hat projects a feeling of connection with that early lifestyle of rugged independence. Couple the hat with a great pair of boots and some good looking jeans and you have a prescription for personal transformation at least until one changes clothes.

Originally cowboy hats were created to protect the wearer from the elements and weather conditions. In modern times the cowboy hat has transformed from a functional piece of equipment to a fashion statement. Some designers whole jobs involve the design of fashion cowboy hats for the pretend cowboy market.

The fabric that has risen to the top in hat making is felt as it tends to outshine every other in terms of durability and comfort. The smooth texture, light weight and moisture resistant character make it the perfect material for cowboy hats. Mens hats have tended to stay in the traditional colors of brown, grey and black, the most popular of which is grey. While womens lean toward more color variety.

Many of you may have seen Xs on the inside band of a cowboy hat and originally this was to signify the quality of the hat and the comparative content of beaver in it. Today beaver is normally not used to make hats and the Xs have become very subjective as each manufacturer sets their own standards for the marking system. A person is not able to compare between brands just by comparing Xs.

All the all the cowboy hat has endured the test of time and changed with the times to continue to be a staple of our society and truly is an American icon that is sure to stay with us for a long time to come. Enjoy your hat and wear it proudly and know what it stands for and where it came from.

The Advantages of Attending a Fashion Show

For some people a great time means having a party, then for others it is just being themselves and watching the latest movie or reading a book that they like. Even so, for others, there specific idea of having fun is going to a fashion show.

It is often found to be true that you might find yourself ending up being a fashion show addict after just one show. A fashion show is not just simply numerous hours of sitting and watching attractive woman walk down the catwalk in extreme outfits. It is a great deal more fun than that. You even have the opportunity to get a lot out of the show as well.

Latest News In Fashion

Clearly, if you go to a fashion show, you will get to view the latest fashions. This can assist you, even if you're not a fashion sellout. This can help you out by giving you an idea of what particular fashion is in at the moment. Even though you may not be particularly interested in what everyone is wearing, you might be inspired to update your wardrobe just a little bit more or find some idea for a fashion that is uniquely your own.

Additionally, a fashion show can provide good entertainment when you find that the latest fashion is, well, hideous. How much fun do you think it will be to have a good laugh with your family and friends about some model who appeared wearing a lion mask and a tail when you get back home?

Goodie Bags

Even though not all fashion shows provide them, some fashion shows give out goodie bags to their attendees. Who doesn't like free stuff? Even though you may not like all the things that goodie bag has in it, you can re-gifted at some later point to someone who you know will like it. The bigger and better the name of the fashion show, the bigger and better the goodie bag they will hand out.

Meeting People

Fashion shows typically end up being excellent social gatherings. First off, you might be able to make some new friends. You might realize that your new best friend was sitting right next to you at a fashion show admiring the same male or female model (as the case may be) that you were. Even better than that, you might meet some important people.

I am not just speaking about the beautiful models, fashion designers, or guest appearances by celebrities. I am referring to important people who could quite possibly shape your career. For example, if you have been trying to break into journalism. There might just be a newspaper editor reporting at the show. Making a social connection with them could give you a jumpstart into a possible job.

Going to a fashion show might not be your idea of fun or your 'cup of tea' as the saying goes. Nevertheless, everyone should at least go to one. You might find a new trend you would like to try out, meet someone that is life-changing, or even realized your newfound love of fashion.

If you end up not enjoying the show, you can always head back home and vow to never go to one again. Regardless, you'll have some type of funny story to share later in life and now you will not be able to say that you have never seen one before.

Cowboy Boots: Pick for Functional Fashion

From time to time as I was growing up it was ok to wear cowboy boots once every 10-15 years as the fashion industry decided they needed something else to sell that year. Now that trend has all but disappeared and it is ok to wear them anywhere boot appropriate. Lets take a detailed look at finding that right pair of functional fashionable boots.

The initial thing to remember is that you want the boot to fit right after you have had it a while. The trick to getting a boot that is going to fit you comfortably 3 months after you buy it is to remember that it will expand a little and so you want to purchase the cowboy boots to be a little bit smaller than you would normally wear so that when they do stretch you will have a perfectly fitting boot that moves with you.

The next thing to consider is what kind of hide do you want to have your boots made of. This can be a strong determinate in the cost of the boots as well as how well they wear and feel. Some skins can actually be rare while some may seem so but in reality they are not that hard to come by. Consider carefully and let your boot advisor help you.

Number three in our list is the process of breaking in your boots. This has to be done slowly as shortcuts to try to do so quickly can damage the boots and actually break the skin or the sole. Just take your time and know that they are going to be uncomfortable for a while and when you are done you will have boots that will comfortably service you for a long time as well as look good.

Next is the appearance of the boots that you are purchasing. There are several things that can influence the end result. The skin that we talked about earlier is only the beginning. Additionally there is color, the stitching, the shape of the stitching and even if there is a picture made into the boot with stitching. These pictures can be many different things but are usually some theme of the cowboy life and environment. You can even go so far as to have your own design custom sewn into your boots but be ready to pay dearly for that as it really is a piece of art when the craftsman goes to work.

Next on our list is the monetary issue. What is most important to you? Are there several things that you value? You may want a boot that looks brand new and looks great but may not be so concerned with the length of service. In which case, you could go for a man-made material. Or you may want your boots to last a life time and you choose durable material and quality construction that you can expect to pay as a masterpiece.

This brings us to the end of the top things to remember when buying a great pair of cowboy boots. I would encourage you to think about your purchase and consider the points we listed so you can enjoy your boots for a long time and not wear them once and then let them set in your closet for a few years until you finally decide they would better serve someone who needs a pair of shoes. Here to hoping you find the prefect pair that you want to wear all the time.

Less Is More Darling

Remember, when it comes to looking uber trendy and cool, less is more. If you're going for the large designer sunglasses then great, but leave the diamond choker or chandelier earrings at home. If you really, really must go out and about in that designer jewellery that is bound to draw attention to you, then leave the designer sunglasses at home. Or so they say.

In the news this week, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has been slated for going over the top on bling. After being snapped in his designer sunglasses along with designer watch it was commented that he was distinctly lacking in the classic French style that the world has come to expect.

It is now expected that a style guru will be brought in to advise and re-dress ahead of the President 's visit to the UK. Never mind world poverty or global warming, let 's make sure he looks the part! This world is fast becoming a ridiculously shallow place. I'm sure this man has much more on his mind than if his watch matches his sunglasses or not!

Surely, we should leave these world leaders to get on with the important jobs of bringing down crime rates and securing the future for our planet than to pressure them into having a certain style of dress? Can we not just leave it to the likes of airhead celebrities to stress over whether or not their designer sunglasses are the right colour size?

When you look at the statistics of optical diseases, then the President is someone to be followed. Age related macular degeneration, where the damage is usually done by early adult hood, is an ever increasing problem. Destroying the central region of the retina, this is the leading cause of loss of eye sight and so much can be done to protect a person from this. Not least, wearing designer sunglasses.

To compound this problem, it has been found that those with this debilitating eye disease also have a heavily increased chance of dying from heart attack or stroke. There is no obvious connection that the medical world can come up with at present, it just seems according to statistics, that this is the case. The only lead medics currently have is the possible connection between heart health and the drugs that are administered for AMD.

On a lighter note, if you like designer sunglasses, you'll love the latest invention to come out of Japan. Intelligent glasses come with built in computer, camera and display screen. Work is being carried out to make these into everyday useable glasses that will aid the wearers everyday life by helping to remember where you left things.

A compact video camera will film everything you see, using a viewfinder that fits over one eye. It will be connected to a small computer worn on the back that will process and be able to recall all information. To programme the glasses, the user wanders around the home for a while, concentrating on things he uses regularly (assuming, of course, he knows where they are!) and when he comes across the item he is to say the name of it for the computer to learn to recognise the object and name eg. phone, keys.

When that item then goes missing, the wearer states what he is looking for and the computer will recall the last known place it 's aw' them. It cannot cope with other people hiding or moving the objects as so frequently happens in my home! The Smart Goggles are perfect for those 's enior' moments that we all suffer from, the only thing they won't do is help you find your glasses.

So, if it 's designer sunglasses for show, smart glasses for those forgetful moments or essential eye protection, face furniture is here to stay.

The Mark Of A Great Fashion Designer

In every industry, from factories to fashion, there are those who lead, those who follow and manage. Some are guided by the compass and others work by the clock, managers and leaders, they share the same space but their motivation and priorities are worlds apart.

You can read books on how to become a good manger, taking care of all the tasks, processes and the administrative responsibilities in support of leaders who go out into the forest in search of trees. Management Guru Peter Drucker has written many best sellers, but the bible for many successful managers is “Management Tasks Processes and Responsibilities”

You’re probably asking yourself what has all this got to do with fashion designers, “we’re getting there”. This is about the skills you don’t necessarily need to become a great fashion designer. It’s about complimentary and compensatory factors that makeup a business, front end to back end, strengths and weaknesses.

If your eye is on leadership and you’ve consumed and digested all the knowledge and information on the subject, but, questions still burn. Consider this one. Don’t be put off by the title; it’s been a best seller for almost twenty years. “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R Covey. It’s about life’s integration with work, adhering to priorities, leading with your left and managing with the right. For you, it will be like switching on a light on a moonless night. But beware, inherent in the 7 habits is a commitment to change the way you are, change your old habits, improve. In essence, confrontation conquers fear.

It is not the kind of book to read on a stormy Sunday afternoon. You’d do better to weather the storm, because there’s a lot of intensity in the words. Evoking thought, you’ll be grabbing a high-lighter to underline all the phrases you don’t want to forget. And you’ll use it as a constant guide as you grow and learn about principle leadership in business.

Then there is Michael E Porters’ complex analytical approach “Competitive Advantage” This is for economists, sales executives, etc. It’s about maximising, expenditure, resources and knowledge. If you have the staying power to weave your way exhaustingly through a labyrinth of thought provoking literature, then there’s a lot learn. Less effort for greater return is one obvious driving principle throughout; another is value processes, no weak links in the chain, so to speak.

Unless you are a very special type of accountant, don’t pick up this book, you will burn your fingers. CA is not about minimising costs, and saving time. You can stop the clock, but the metre keeps running in New York Taxi Cabs. A smart taxi driver will take you the long road home, like a good economist he’ll want to maximise his return on effort. Here the vast difference between minimisation and maximisation are spelled out in a way that challenges logic in a very powerful and honest way. “Yikes”

For the strategist, there’s “Strategic Selling” it’s a brainstorm. Once digested you will stop trying to sell and learn about your target market is demanding, then simply supply accordingly. “Research”

Now, try to find a book that teaches you how to be a great fashion designer or any kind of designer for that fact. You can easily be taught the technical aspects of design and theorise all you like about its beginning and transformations. But unless you are gifted with the skill of being able to realise scattered ideas and thoughts, being able to visualise their end before putting pen to paper then you can only achieve to a certain level.

On this subject of truly great designers, three names come immediately to mind; Frank Lloyd Wright, Isambard Brunell and Vivienne Westwood.

There is only one “falling Water House” one “Clifton Suspension Bridge” and only one “Orb”. Vivienne Westwood has designed everything from silk ties to suits, crockery to designer cufflinks. “The Orb” is recognised the world over as a symbol of design excellence.

But even behind the designer façade of Westwoods London store, mangers offer administrative support for their leader; the two go hand in hand.

Without harmonious integration of these leadership and management disciplines, businesses can never fully achieve the heights they desire.

How To Choose The Best Fashion Design School

A successful future in the fashion design industry depends on the right choice of school to attend. Although fashion design is not one of the more popular careers to pursue, if your talents lie in this field, there is ample opportunity awaiting you. However, the first thing to hurdle is your choice of school.

When choosing a fashion design school, consider the following factors.

Area of Focus

Look into the nature of the school. Is it solely a fashion design school or does it offer other courses. Is this school well-known for its emphasis on fashion design?

Fashion design schools are few and far between. This makes it harder to choose one that fits your bill. Your first task will be to find a reputable school that will aid you in your training.

Also, look into whether the school participates in any fashion design competitions or has accomplished anything of reknown in the industry. This is a sure sign of their commitment to the fashion arts and its education among students.

Different schools have different strengths, find a school that plays to your strengths and has specializations in the field of your choice.

For example, you might choose a very well-known fashion design school only to find out that they specialize in childrens’ clothing, while the field of your choice is adult formal wear. This could diffuse your interests, and dull your specialization.

Make sure you know what field the school you are scouting focuses on. This will help you specialize in that area too.

Alumni and Job Placements

Does the college offer job placement assistance? And has the alumni from this school gone on to be successful professionals? Always learn from other’s previous experience. If you see that those that had gone through this school before you received proper training and are successful in their field, that is an indication of a good school.

Most of these reputable schools have numerous connections in the graphic arts industry. They usually offer job placement services. You may want to consider this when choosing a school.

It would do no harm to start looking at the educational background of your admired fashion designer. Checking out the schools they came from will give an idea of the sort of training these artists went through. From here, you may make decisions as to whether you would like to choose the same school as they did.

Curriculum

You must assess whether the curriculum is relevant to you field of study. You may want to compare the curricula of different schools to see which offers the best form of education.

It would also be wise to check the quality of the teaching staff at that school. Having established artists who teach at a fashion design school is also an indication of a good training program.

Student to Teacher Ratio

Ask yourself: how big are the classes and how many teachers and classes are available at this school before you choose it. The more the students, the lesser the efficacy of the teacher. However, if there are too few students per teacher, that could tell of a different problem – that of quality. If this is the case, it may be that the school is not popular or is suffering from anemic academic performance.

Accreditation

Accreditation means the school has passed certain standards of educational quality. Accreditation is performed by the U.S. Department of Education. Fashion design schools must be accredited to prove their level of competence.

Check with the State Postsecondary School Licensing Bureau to see if the college you are investigating is accredited. Also, check the National Approval and Accreditation for this concern.

Cost

Some people may proclaim that to obtain their education, they would spare no coin. Unfortunately, it also pays to be practical in your choice of fashion design school. If the school you choose has a tuition rate that is beyond your financial capability, you might find yourself working and unable to pursue your studies consistently due to the financial stress which may lead you to look for part-time work.

Scholarships

You might want to consider whether the design school you are looking at offers any scholarships. You also might want to know the terms to them too. Some schools offer scholarships based on academic performance. Some offer them based on fashion design competitions they hold regularly.

Your choice of school is an investment that will last you a lifetime. Proper care and investigation in choosing such is truly important. When you are comfortable with your choice of fashion design schools, you can now chart your path towards a successful career.
